The 2008 Detroit Lions 0-16 Season: How a Team Loses Every Game

The 2008 Detroit Lions lost all 16 of their games, the first team in NFL history to finish a 16-game regular season without a win. They were outscored 517-268 across the year and started three different quarterbacks, none of whom won a game, from the opener in Atlanta to the finale at Lambeau Field.

That record is the exact opposite of the one this site is built around. A 17-0 season and an 0-16 season are the same probability problem read from opposite ends: one team has to survive every single Sunday, the other has to fail on every single one. Detroit is the closest anyone has come to running the table in the wrong direction.

Has any NFL team gone 0-16?

Two have. Detroit did it in 2008 and the Cleveland Browns did it in 2017, nine years later. Before those seasons, no team had lost every game since the schedule expanded to 16 games in 1978 — the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers went 0-14 under the older format, and several 1940s teams went winless across 10- and 11-game schedules.

Detroit’s 517 points allowed is the highest total any winless team has ever surrendered — an average of 32.3 points conceded per game. Cleveland’s 2017 team was, by margin, meaningfully less bad. Tampa Bay’s 1976 expansion team was worse than either on a per-game basis, scoring 8.9 points a game.

What Lions QB went 0-16?

Three quarterbacks started games during the 0-16 season, and all three finished 0-for-everything:

Dan Orlovsky is the name most people are reaching for. He inherited the job for the Week 6 trip to Minnesota and produced the single most replayed moment of the season: dropping back in his own end zone, drifting sideways under pressure, and stepping across the back line for a safety without appearing to notice he had left the field. Detroit lost that game 12-10. The two points from the safety were the exact margin.

Orlovsky has since spent years on national television talking about it openly, which is a more graceful outcome than the play deserved.

Did Dan Campbell play for the Lions when they went 0-16?

Yes — for one game. This is one of the most common misconceptions about the season, and the honest answer is more interesting than a flat no.

Campbell, now Detroit’s head coach, was a tight end on the 2008 roster. He played in the Week 1 loss at Atlanta, caught a 21-yard pass, and injured his hamstring. He was placed on injured reserve on September 9, two days after that opener, and did not appear again. He was released in February 2009 and signed with New Orleans, where a knee injury in training camp ended his playing career before it started.

So Campbell was on the field for exactly one quarter of the franchise’s worst year, and watched the other 15 games from the sideline in street clothes. When he was hired as head coach in 2021, that one game gave him a real, if unwanted, connection to the record his teams would spend the next several years erasing.

The games they nearly won

An 0-16 season sounds like 16 blowouts. It was not. Five of Detroit’s losses were decided by eight points or fewer:

Flip two of those and the 2008 Lions are a forgettable 2-14 team nobody would write about. That is the whole shape of the record. Going winless does not require being historically terrible in every game — it requires being bad enough to lose the close ones every time, which is a slightly different and much rarer failure. The blowouts were real too. Tennessee beat Detroit 47-10 on Thanksgiving. New Orleans won 42-7 in Week 16. Green Bay put up 48 in Week 2.

What happened after

Rod Marinelli was fired the day after the finale at Lambeau. Matt Millen, the general manager who had presided over the roster’s construction, had been dismissed back in September, three games in. Detroit took Matthew Stafford first overall in the 2009 draft.

The losing did not stop when the season did. Detroit had already lost its final 2007 game, and it lost the first two games of 2009 before beating Washington 19-14 on September 27, 2009, with Stafford starting. That ended a 19-game losing streak — the longest in franchise history and, at that point, the second longest in NFL history behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 26 straight from 1976 into 1977.

Where it sits in the record book

Winless seasons are rarer than perfect ones in one narrow sense and far more common in another.
